 C. How to do Wooden Block Printing?

Fabric color or any other color ink is spread on these wooden blocks using paint brush or a piece of sponge/foam and then the block is firmly pressed on paper, fabric, textile, wallpaper, collectible, palm, clay, canvas or any other place where you want to make your own design / border. These blocks are used to make multi design impression and patterns in India on special occasions like wedding, diwali, anniversary, festivals.

1. The consistency of color ink should not be too thick or not too thin.
2. The paint or color ink should be evenly spread over the blocks using sponge.
3. Do not expect 100% perfection in achieving uniformity of desired designs.

 D. Which paints can we use for block printing?

Acrylic paints are not very flexible and remain stiff. If used on fabric, they may even get cracked after drying. Acrylic paints can be turned into fabric paint by adding fabric medium. Acrylic medium dilutes and thins the paint and it helps to turn it into a true fabric paint.

All fabric paints that come in a jar, bottle or tube are water-based acrylics. This means we can mix and dilute them with water. If you wish to start with fabric painting, you need at least few paints which you can use for your first experiments. Our recommendation goes to Fabric paints.

 E. Henna designing using wooden blocks?

Mehndi is a traditional temporary form of body art using “Henna” which has been practiced for over 5000 years in Pakistan, India, Africa and Middle East. Mehndi (Henna) has numerous artistic uses including designing, decoration, adornment, cooling agent (mainly practiced by the people of Rajasthan in the past) for making temporary skin tattoos and also applied as a ceremonial ritual in many cultures.

Mehndi powder is made by milling and sifting the dried leaves of HENNA plant (botanical name : Lawsonia inermis). For using Henna powder for adornment and designing of body especially hands, palms, feet, legs, shoulder back this powder is converted into creamy paste and then applied on skin using cones and wooden blocks. Mehndi will stain red to brown color.

Henna Blocks Designing
1. Heena Mehndi Powder
2. A piece of sponge
3. Wooden blocks of different designs which you want to give designs on your hands, palms or feet.
4. Tissue paper (to wipe off extra henna mehndi paste).

1. Fresh Mehndi Powder, 20 grams or 1/4 Cup.
2. Pour 20 grams of fresh mehndi powder into a small bowl.
3. Add 1/4 cup of fresh water or bottled water.
4. Stir the powder and water until they are completely mixed together and no lumps of dry powder remain.

1. Select the area like your hands, feet, and palms or shoulder back which you want to design.
2. Clean the area chosen with water, dry it up completely using towel to make sure that it is free from oil.
3. Take the wooden block having desired design which you want to make on the area chosen.
4. Using a small piece of sponge spread Henna (Mehndi) paste evenly on the chosen wooden block.
5. Place this wooden block on the body area chosen and without applying any pressure, immediately take off the wooden block to get the best impression.
6. Wait for 3-4 hours for drying of Henna. The longer time you give henna to dry out the more richer color it will give.
7. When Mehndi will dry out completely and starts flaking off; do not wash it with water. Simply flake it off with blunt side of knife.
8. Make a thick solution of lemon juice and sugar. Apply this solution on the mehndi design using cotton once henna starts drying up .This will give more rich color to your mehndi design.
9. Remember to do skin allergy test for Henna (Mehndi) if you are applying it on your skin for the first time. After doing skin allergy test wait for sometime if you get itchy or burning feeling then do not use it.
10. Henna will give different color on different skins and on different body areas. Color is darkest on palms. On the other side of hand, the color is much lighter and then on arm it gets lighter. Best color results will come after one to two days of application of Henna (Mehndi).

 G. Wooden Block Care Instructions

When using water based paints with your wooden printing blocks, simply scrub the blocks with hot soapy water after you have finished your block printing. However, when using acrylic or any other paints, please wipe clean with a damp cloth as soon as you have used your blocks. When dry, the plastic based paints solidify and clog up the carving.

 H. How we make wooden blocks?

The wood block is carefully prepared as a relief pattern, which means the areas to show 'white' are cut away with a knife, chisel, or sandpaper leaving the characters or image to show in 'black' at the original surface level. The block was cut along the grain of the wood. It is necessary only to ink the block and bring it into firm and even contact with the paper or cloth to achieve an acceptable print. The content would of course print "in reverse" or mirror-image, a further complication when text was involved. The art of carving the woodcut is technically known as xylography, though the term is rarely used in English.
